Mason Amos sorry for ‘unacceptable’ actions with Ateneo exit

MANILA, Philippines — Following his controversial transfer to La Salle, Mason Amos broke his silence and apologized to Ateneo for not disclosing his final decision of his transfer to the team.

Amos, who is currently with Gilas Pilipinas in Latvia for the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OTQ), on Friday admitted that he was “not being considerate” with the way his decision to leave the Blue Eagles came to light.

“It’s been a tough week with a decision I made due to my reasons. However, my actions were unacceptable and not called for. Although I did mention the offer to the management, they weren’t informed about my final decision as well as my teammates because I felt that it was a personal decision for me and my family,” wrote Amos on X.

The news of 6-foot-7 Amos’ departure from Ateneo to reportedly take his act to archrival and Season 86 champion La Salle broke on Monday. He posted a lengthy goodbye to the Blue Eagles on his Instagram the day after.

“I will apologize for not being considerate. To my teammates, coaches, the community and the alumni I am sorry for my actions and I will own up to a mistake that could’ve been handled better,” Amos said. “I don’t expect forgiveness but I just hope for understanding. I do love Ateneo and I wish all the best.”

The Filipino-Australian big man impressed in his first and only season with the Blue Eagles, averaging 8.7 points and 3.3 rebounds. Ateneo reached the Final Four but got dethroned by the twice-to-beat University of the Philippines.

La Salle has yet to officially confirm the acquisition of Amos, who will undergo a one-year residency and be eligible to play next year in UAAP Season 88.

Amos is part of Gilas’ bench in Riga, Latvia as the Filipinos chase a ticket to the Paris Olympics. They will face Brazil in the semifinal on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. (Manila time) in Riga.

Geo Chiu ‘hurt’ over Mason Amos’ sudden Ateneo departure

MANILA, Philippines—Count Geo Chiu among the guys who were affected by the news of Mason Amos’s sudden departure from the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

During Strong Group Athletics’ training for the William Jones Cup, Chiu bared that he was quite hurt by the news of Amos leaving the Blue Eagles after just one season in the UAAP and

“Just like what everyone feels right now, of course, it’s painful,” said Chiu, a former Ateneo big man, at Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong on Tuesday. “It’s like a cut here [in the heart]. Me, I just try to be in the middle as much as possible.”

Chiu and Amos played together during Season 86 when the Blue Eagles finished with a Final Four spot before tumbling at the hands of the University of the Philippines in the semifinals.

After last year though, Chiu decided to forgo his playing years in Ateneo and turned professional in Taiwan with the Mustangs then most recently signing with Ehime in B2 of the Japanese B.League a few days ago.

Without Chiu, Amos was expected to be the Blue Eagles’ next big thing. Until he wasn’t, as Amos departed Ateneo on Monday in a stunning announcement and is reported to be moving to archrival La Salle.

Chiu, though said, he chose to understand the situation and Amos’ decision-making but couldn’t deny the disappointment as his older brother in the team.

“I get the other side but I’m also trying to understand Mason. There’s so many things going on right now for him but as a Kuya, I’m still worried for him and everything he’s been going through.”

“But it still hurts. ‘Di ko inexpect eh.”

Amos is currently in Riga, Latvia, for Gilas Pilipinas’ run in the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament while Chiu will also represent the Philippines in a few days with SGA in the Jones Cup.

Inquirer Sports has reached out to La Salle coach Topex Robinson for a comment on whether Amos is headed to Taft or not but there was no response as of writing.

MANILA, Philippines—Mason Amos took the UAAP by surprise on Monday after announcing his departure from Ateneo.

Amos is leaving Ateneo after just one season with the team and is reportedly moving to reigning UAAP champion La Salle.

“To my teammates — with a heavy heart I would like to express that you guys have been a huge part of my life. I am thankful for everything that we were able to share. I have no regrets having fought by your side,” wrote Amos on his Instagram.

“I am thankful that you guys taught me lessons and that we were able to create memories I will cherish forever. I love you guys and that’ll never change.”

The 6-foot-7 Amos impressed in his first and only UAAP season with the Blue Eagles last year where he averaged 8.7 points and 3.3 rebounds.

“I am thankful for everything you have taught me. I am thankful for the opportunity, the teachings, the adversity and the knowledge you have instilled in me. I am so blessed to be able to be coached by you guys. I love you all and I am thankful for everything.”

The Fil-Aussie big man helped Ateneo reach the Final Four with a 7-7 record in the elimination round before losing to University of the Philippines.
