MANILA, Philippines — Ran Takahashi and Yuji Nishida vowed to bounce back after fan favorite Japan fell short against Canada in five sets in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Week 3 opener on Tuesday evening at Mall of Asia Arena.

Energized by the roaring Philippine crowd, Japan fought back from a 1-2 match deficit but still yielded to Canada, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, 20-25, 15-10, dropping to a 6-3 record still in sixth place. FULL STORY

VNL 2024 schedule: Week 3 Manila, Philippines leg

MANILA, Philippines — Team USA braces for a tough climb to the Final Eight of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) as it plays crucial games in its first stint in Manila for Week 3.

All eyes are on the Americans as they play at Mall of Asia Arena for the first time in the Philippines’ third straight hosting of the prestigious world tournament.

“It’s a pleasure to be here. It’s our first year here. We felt a lot of love online and on social media from Filipino fans so to finally be here and experience it in person is a real pleasure,” USA skipper Micah Christenson said. “We’re excited to experience it all.” FULL STORY

MANILA, Philippines — Yuki Ishikawa and Japan are elated to play in Manila for the third time in a row in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2024 Week 3 starting Tuesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The Japanese men’s volleyball team, the fan-favorite of Filipinos, resumes its VNL campaign against Canada at 8:30 p.m. after the Netherlands and Brazil’s match at 5 p.m.

“We are so happy to be here again. We played for the last two years and we are doing well. This week is very important for us because, after our pool matches, we have the (VNL) finals and the Olympic Games,” said Ishiwaka, who will play in the Paris Olympics 2024. “Our goal is we’ll take good lessons to the Olympic Games. Unable to stop June Mar, Meralco still finds way to win

MANILA, Philippines—A win’s a win, no matter the cost.

In the case of Meralco in Game 5 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals, the Bolts won 92-88, to take the commanding 3-2 lead despite allowing Beermen star June Mar Fajardo to go off for 38 points and 18 rebounds.

Raymond Almazan wouldn’t have it any other way, though.

“If you’ll ask me, I’ll trade that [performance] for a win,” said Almazan in Filipino at Araneta Coliseum on Friday. “He can even score 60 as long as we win.”

Almazan dropped 14 points and four rebounds in the crucial game but he got the last laugh over Fajardo who had a better shooting night.

While Almazan didn’t have the most dynamic night on offense, it was his defense that helped Meralco move to the cusp of making history.

And it wasn’t just Almazan, too, who had a hand in tiring out the Best Player of the Conference awardee.

The Bolts seemingly found the fix to San Miguel’s puzzle and one of the things they found effective was to put multiple bigs on Fajardo, including Almazan.

“What coach (Luigi Trillo) tells us is, if he scores, we run. If we foul and foul, he’s going to get some rest and we wouldn’t be able to run,” explained the lanky center.

Make no mistakes about it, though. It wasn’t easy to contain the seven-time MVP no matter how many bodies you put on him.

“June Mar’s heavy, he’s what, 260? Meanwhile, I’m at 220 but still trying my best to stop or at least limit him,” Almazan said.

June Mar Fajardo knows San Miguel will bounce back

MANILA, Philippines—Down but not out.

That’s exactly how June Mar Fajardo sees San Miguel Beermen and their chances in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals after going down 3-2 in the best-of-seven series against Meralco.

The Beermen are now just a win away from letting the All-Filipino crown slip, but Fajardo believes his team has what it takes to drag the duel into a deciding Game 7.

“We still have a chance. We’ll bounce back. This is a long series,” said Fajardo in Filipino after their 92-88 loss to the Bolts in Game 5 on Friday.

“We’ll work hard on that next game because we want to get the championship [again]. We won’t just give it that easily… We’ll have to play San Miguel basketball.”

Fajardo played like his usual self with a monster double-double of 38 points and 18 rebounds, showing another reason why he was hailed as the Philippine Cup’s Best Player a few days ago.

The other Beermen, though, had some struggles with the guard tandem of CJ Perez and Marcio Lassiter ice cold in the crucial loss.

Lassiter finished with six points, missing eight of his 11 tries from. Whole Perez had 17, he had quite the difficulty getting there shooting just four of his 16 attempts.

But while having San Miguel’s lethal shooters frozen posed a problem, nothing was more detrimental to San Miguel than seeing their assists count drop.

“[We had the] same problems in our previous losses,” said Fajardo.

“Our assists were low and that’s why we lost. That’s what coach (Jorge Gallent) told us. We almost had great shots too but we just couldn’t get them to go,” added the seven-time league MVP.

San Miguel just has one day to try to recover with  Game 6 set for Sunday, also at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
