MANILA, Philippines—Carlo Bumina-ang’s first challenge as an official member of ONE Championship has arrived in the form of Asa Ten Pow for ONE Fight Night 24: Brooks vs. Balart.

As announced by ONE, Bumina-ang will test his mettle anew against Ten Pow in the bantamweight division just a few months after signing his 100,000-dollar contract deal.

The Team Lakay fighter is eager to prove his worth against his American competitor.

“I want to show that I belong in this league,” said Bumina-ang in Filipino. “Expect this fight to be as explosive as the last. Only two things will happen here; I knock him out or I make him submit.”

Bumina-ang made noise last May in ONE Friday Fights 65, where he sealed the ONE contract with a second-round submission win over Chayan Oorzhak.

Before that dominant win, the bantamweight combatant won five straight which helped earn him his full-time contract.

But in his official debut, he will have to deal with a resurgent Ten Pow, who won over Rambolek Chor Ajalaboon in ONE Fight night 14: Stamp vs. Ham via TKO in the third round.

Tan Pow and Bumina-ang will clash in an undercard bout to back up the main event bout between Jarred brooks and Gustavo Balart at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on August 3.

MANILA, Philippines—Coming off an injury, Carlo Paalam is “feeling better” ahead of the Paris Olympics.

“Right now, it’s feeling better because I can really move it now,” said Paalam in Filipino, pertaining to his shoulder.

“Unlike before when it’s hard for me just even to change my clothes, now, by God’s grace, I’m adjusting with the help of my PTs (physical therapists) and coaches.”

Paalam injured his shoulder last March which forced him to withdraw in the Round of 16 of the World Qualification Tournament.

The 25-year-old Paalam returned to action in June in the second World Boxing Olympic Qualification where he earned his ticket to the Paris Games following a unanimous decision win over India’s Sachin Sachin in the semifinal of the men’s 57kg division.

Although, Paalam is still not 100 percent, the injury doesn’t seem to be much of a concern for him as he goes for an Olympic gold three years after claiming silver at the Tokyo Olympics.

“There’s some parts where it hurts sometimes but it’s very minimal,” he said.

“Sometimes I don’t feel it but I just enjoy it. This is a fight and I can manage it.”

Paalam is one of five Filipino boxers who will be competing at the Paris Games. Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Marcial, who won silver and bronze medals in Tokyo, Hergie Bacyadan and Aira Villegas complete the Philippine boxing team in Paris.

Carlo Paalam says national anthem is best heard in moment of triumph

A silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics is a thing of the past for Carlo Paalam.

“For me, the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo is different from now because from what we experienced before, we all went back to zero,” Paalam, who settled for the silver after bowing to Galal Yafai in the Finals of men’s boxing flyweight division in Japan, said in Filipino.

“We aren’t [being confident] that [because] we are already Olympians [we’re favorites] … when you think like that, you are inflating your ego and you think too much of yourself,” the 25-year-old pug said in a press conference to send off the country’s bets in Makati City on Thursday.

Paalam earned another shot at the Summer Games gold with a unanimous decision against India’s Sachin Siwach in the men’s 57-kilogram division of the Second World Qualification Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, earlier this month.

He will lead this year’s Filipino Olympic bets during the opening ceremonies when he shares flag-bearing duties with fellow Tokyo silver medalist Nesthy Petecio.

“I am so happy to be [a flagbearer] because we are not only carrying our family names but the whole Philippines and walk holding the Philippine flag,” the soft-spoken fighter said.

Eumir Marcial, who jumped to the 80-kg category, also qualified again for a chance to better his bronze finish in his Olympic debut. Summer Games first timers Hergie Bacyadan (75 kg) and Aira Villegas (50 kg) complete the country’s entries for boxing.

Excited, not scared

Paalam does not want to get ahead of himself and announce that he will be gunning for a better finish in Paris.

“We aren’t thinking of the medals yet because we [need to be able to convince] the judges in every fight so we will just do our best and hopefully, whoever holds the decision will be fair,” Paalam said.

“I am super excited with a little bit of nervousness, but not to the point of being scared. Excited to perform well in Paris,” he added.

For Paalam, it will be important to focus on the positive things heading into the European fashion hub.

“We don’t think about the negative, we always think about the positive because that’s what’s more important and our courage and smarts because once you think about the negative things, nothing will happen,” he said. “I am excited to show and perform [with] the best Carlo that I can give in Paris.”

“I am not thinking about who among my opponents will be tough because it will be like you’re already defeating yourself,” Paalam said when asked who he will be wary of facing inside the ring.

Aside from shooting for his dream of a gold that has eluded him the first time he took on the world’s grandest sporting stage, there was still one thing that Paalam will be looking forward to.

“It’s more fun to listen to the national anthem of the Philippines if you stand in the middle [of the podium] after a victory. That’s our goal.”

MANILA, Philippines–Boxers Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio will carry the Philippine flag in the parade of nations at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Paalam and Petecio, who both secured silver medals in the previous Olympics in Tokyo, were designated flag-bearers by the Philippine Olympic Committee for the opening rites of the global sports showpiece on July 26.

The 25-year-old Paalam got the silver after a split-decision defeat to Galal Yafai of Great Britain during their men’s flyweight finale three years ago while Petecio, 32, earned the distinction as the first Filipino woman boxer who reached the podium in the Olympics.

The silver finish of both Paalam and Petecio plus the bronze medal of boxer Eumir Marcial in the middleweight division broke the country’s medal drought in the sport since Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco claimed a silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games.

A total of 15 Filipinos have already booked their spots in Paris headed by pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnasts Carlos Yulo, Aleah Finnegan, Emma Malabuyo, Levi Ruivivar and weightlifters Vanessa Sarno, Elreen Ando and John Ceniza.

Joining them are fencer Samantha Catantan, rower Joanie Delgaco and boxers Hergie Bacyadan, Aira Villegas and Marcial.

Several more athletes from athletics and swimming are expected to qualify after the Olympic qualification door closes on June 30.
